The Great Barrier Barrier Reef off Cairns is World renowned for the Giant Black Marlin fishery that coincides with their annual spawning migration along the edge of the Reef.

This 150 mile stretch of Reef edge, from south of Cairns to the North of Cooktown produce large numbers of female Black Marlin from 500 pounds to well over 1000 pounds in size.

During the period between mid September to December the males from 150 to 300 pounds congregate and follow the the larger females along the reef edge.

This is what has anglers from all over the world descending into Cairns, for a chance of fishing for a Giant Black Marlin over the magical 1000 pounds.

Light tackle Black marlin fishing during the seasonal months of July to mid September, provide great sports fishing opportunities off the inner bait grounds of the Great Barrier Reef in Tropical North Queensland Australia.

During these cooler months the inner reef grounds become a pelagic play ground for Juvenile Black Marlin, Sailfish, different tuna species and the Spanish mackerel. These charters are only an hour’s run out of cairns and make for great family day charters.

The Juvenile Black marlin off Cairns are the post spawned youngsters from the Giant black marlin season the pervious year and with the abundant food supply reach up to a manageable size of 10 to 20kg’s on light tackle
